Great relationships the key to a fulfilling career

by KinCare — 27 September 2018

A longtime member of the KinCare team Bernadette shared with us why her career keeps getting better every year.

A job that made a difference to people’s lives was what Bernadette craved. Fast-forward 5 years and she is helping more people each day than she ever imagined possible.

Despite an impressive resume, when Bernadette reached her 40s she still hadn’t found her dream job.

Back then, she was very dissatisfied in a desk role. She had done so much – run a small business and held demanding roles in the education, training and medical sectors. But there was something missing: the opportunity to be there for people who really needed her – and help them thrive.

“At the time my daughter was working as a Home Care Worker,” recalls Bernadette. “She kept saying; ‘Mum, you’re a born carer – you should get a job in home care!’”

Then one day, Bernadette saw a job with KinCare advertised and applied. Though she lacked hands-on experience, she was thrilled to be offered the role of Home Care Worker – and the chance to receive expert training and support.

“At the time my daughter was working as a Home Care Worker, she kept saying; ‘Mum, you’re a born carer – you should get a job in home care!’”

Bernadette’s natural leadership skills, adaptability, team work, and passion for the KinCare approach soon made her a vital team member. It was clear that our Customers agreed – so many of them were requesting Bernadette, she could barely keep up!

You can make a difference every day

Are you are looking for a career that allows you to make an incredible difference to people’s lives every day? We are always looking for compassionate, dedicated superstars to join our team.

Bernadette explains: “Because I was a bit older and had common sense and had worked in the medical field, I wasn’t daunted.

“I like to think I’ve got good people skills – I’m respectful of our different cultures, have a good sense of humour and stay calm in the most challenging situations.”

Bernadette recalls with joy the three rewarding years she spent supporting her Customers to stay in their homes for as long as they could.

“It’s about genuinely putting them first,” she says. “Being good at my job means being proactive. It’s respecting our Customers and being just what they need me to be.”

She admits she has never stopped being fascinated and inspired by the lives and wisdom of the older people she meets and the way they “take the time to smell the roses”.

“I just loved this job from the start,” she recalls. “To this day it’s the best job I’ve ever held in my life. It’s an honour to help our Customers.”

Two years ago, Bernadette’s Manager, seeing her potential, recommended that she take a step up into a role leading and inspiring a team of 60 Home Care Workers to provide the most incredible support possible to our Customers. It was exciting to get support and training to build her management skills.

“I like to think I’ve got good people skills – I’m respectful of our different cultures, have a good sense of humour and stay calm in the most challenging situations.”

She is always available on the phone or email to give her team of Home Care Workers advice and support. She recognises their outstanding achievements with monthly team awards.

“I show absolute respect for my workers,” she says. “I advocate for them. I tell them my role is to help them be the best worker they can be.”

What Bernadette loves most about her job today is that she can make an incredible difference for KinCare’s team members and Customers. It’s all about building good relationships – something Bernadette excels at.

Bernadette is proud that she found the kind of meaningful career she yearned for. The opportunity may have come late in her career – but it was well worth the wait.
