Nourish and Nurture

Support for the Frail Aged, People with Disabilities and their Carers.

BAULKHAM HILLS, May 13 2009 – KinCare a leading Australian In-Home Care Specialist organisation are actively working in the Sutherland Shire to ensure the frail aged, people with a disability and their carers are being nourished and nurtured.

In a program funded by the Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care, KinCare is reaching out to the community to promote good nutrition and to enhance individuals continued independence at home.  The NSW HACC funded food services program is designed to meet individual’s daily nutritional requirements for health and general well being through a combination of approaches including: assistance with preparation and cooking of food in their home; information and advice about nutrition; menus and special diets; assistance with shopping and ensuring they understand food labels, safe food handling practices and appropriate storage.

Based on the individual needs and aspirations of participants, the services provided by KinCare are tailored to be culturally appropriate and offer social support in addition to the core purpose of the program.  Individuals are provided with choice and flexibility regarding the type and amount of service offered and are assisted to plan services that will enhance their independence.  Carers are included in and benefit from the program through improved nutrition for themselves and the service recipient, and enhanced enjoyment of meals together. KinCare is also linking clients with other complementary service providers to provide sustainable solutions.

The program offers both preventative strategies and early intervention for people who have poor diets or particular dietary requirements due to health conditions. For one participant, the program identified poor nutritional health was a result of inadequate dentures.  To ensure the client remained nourished and nurtured, KinCare encouraged replacement of the dentures thus improving their daily nutritional food intake and enjoyment of food.

KinCare will be holding a Community Awareness Session on Monday, 25 May at the Miranda Community Centre, 93 Karimbla Road, MIRANDA commending at 10:30am. Members of the Press and the Community are invited to attend, to register your attendance contact KinCare on 1300 733 510.
