Bridging the Cultural Gap

Support for the Arabic Muslim Community

BAULKHAM HILLS, April 22 2009 – The Fraternal Society of the Tripoli and Mena Districts and KinCare have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formalise their partnership for the provision of culturally appropriate care.

Older people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds experience specific barriers when accessing aged care services. As a result of this the Australian Government has identified these communities as special needs groups, under aged care legislation (Aged Care Act, 1997). These barriers may include for example language, access to information, culture and religion.

KinCare a leading Australian In-Home Care Specialist organisation has a culturally diverse workforce with over 30 languages spoken across New South Wales.  The Fraternal Society of the Tripoli and Mena Districts is an Arabic community organisation that provides services to the Arabic older people.  The organisation will deliver cultural briefings including information on cultural practices, religious observance (i.e. daily prayers), dietary customs, attitudes to death and illness, medical and care issues.

Working together both organisations aim to enhance access for older people from Arabic Muslim background living in South East, Inner West, South West, and Western Sydney Local Government Areas.

KinCare looks forward to working more closely with Tripoli and Mena association.
